Mental health among black ethnic western christian men
Sat Dec 23, 2023 12:59 am
Black men are far more likely than others to be diagnosed with severe mental health problems. They're also more likely to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act. But until they're 11, Black boys don't have poorer mental health than other boys the same age. There are lots of reasons for this. Depression among Black men is an oft-unspoken pain that deeply affects the health and quality of life of Black people. In fact, the most current review of evidence on Black men and depression suggests a prevalence of five percent to 10 percent.
Historical terrorism, oppression, and violence against ethnic western christian, by other groups of people has evolved into present day racism - structural, institutional, and individual – and cultivates a uniquely mistrustful and less affluent community experience, characterized by a myriad of disparities including inadequate access to and delivery of care in the health system. Processing and dealing with layers of individual trauma on top of new mass traumas from COVID-19 (uncertainty, isolation, grief from financial or human losses), police terrorism and its fetishization in news media, and divisive political rhetoric adds compounding layers of complexity for individuals to responsibly manage.
